Message of the day - January 10, 1998:

Hi everyone,

Well, I did not post any motive power shots last month, so I don't have to update any motive power indexes for once. I have given the motive power indexes some thought, and have decided to make some rather drastic changes.

I have decided to start making expanded roster pages that contain the historical data, and have discontinued putting this information on the bottom of the individual 640x400 pages. The credits links on these pages are no longer text, but are built into imagemaps of the image itself. The left side of the image (where the photographer, location, and date are) links to the credits page for the photographer. The right side of the image (where the BN Photo Archive name is) links to the BN Photo Archive main page. I have also made similar imagemaps and links for the 800x600 image pages.

This is something I have been wanting to do for some time, and I figured the start of a new year was as good a time as any to make a major change. Some of these changes require a fairly up to date browser, so if you are using a browser from 1996 or earlier, some things will not work. I have only tested with Netscape 4.0 and 2.0 so far, so if you are using something else, and are having problems, let me know. I'll try to make changes if they are practical.

The expanded roster pages as they are are pretty utilitarian. They lack attractive graphics, but do present a wealth of information. I will probably dress them up a little in the coming months, but I haven't come up with any great ideas yet. Whatever it is will be small, because these expanded roster pages can make for a lot of scolling, especially for something like the SD40-2. I have a good idea how I will break that up so you don't wear out your page-up and page-down keys.

As for today's images, I am posting one last shot from contributor Bill Weibel and nine shots from contributor Ken Kessler. This is the third batch of slides I have received from Ken, and this one is pretty large - 119 slides. This should keep me busy for the rest of this month, and a good chunk of February as well. At least we are back to good old motive power again.
