Message of the day - January 23, 2000:

Hi everyone,

Today's theme is BN units all modified in the same way since the BNSF merger - the headlights were moved to the top of the nose. Only two of these shots from contributor Chris Stewart are of units I did not already have, but all provide new information, since these photos all show a change in the headlight position. The most peculiar headlight modification was of SD40 #6339. This unit already had a low headlight from it's CB&Q (C&S) ancestry as shown in this 1993 photo, yet it's headlight was repositioned just inches higher on the nose as shown in this 1998 photo.

One interesting thing I have noticed is that the touch up paint work for the most part looks very good, however the paint on the headlight casing is a bit inconsistent. Some are neatly painted to match the nose striping, while others are painted white or perhaps silver, and in once case, the headlight is still black as it was when mounted high on the cab.

Note that one of today's units is a one-of-a-kind BN wreck repair. BN 7023 got the rear radiator section from an SD45, making it a rather unique looking SD40-2. Two other units were similarly modified with larger SD45 radiators when rebuilt for experimental liquefied natural gas fuel. I could use some good shots of those LNG units.

Enjoy,
Charles
