Message of the day - February 26, 2001:

Hi everyone,

Here are ten photos of BN SD40-2's from Mark R. Lynn. While all ten photos are of the same locomotive model, there is plenty of variety to note. Most notable of the ten is both of the "one of a kind" SD40-2's with the large BN logo on the long hood. This scheme first appeared when BN SD40-2 #8002 was painted in the original experimental "tiger stripe" scheme with orange and black stripes on the cab front and nose. The nose of the unit was later painted in the standard "tiger stripe" scheme (an earlier photo from Mark) with green on the side of the nose, and then later the nose was again painted in a unique "whiteface" scheme variation where the large BN logo was retained. BNSF has not changed it other than to lower the nose headlight as of Mark's 1999 photo. Another unit, SD40-2 #7812 was painted almost the same as 8002, the only difference being the frame sill. 8002 has alternating green and white, while 7812 is solid white. 7812 was painted long after 8002, and may have been the last locomotive painted in BN green.

Enjoy,
Charles
