Message of the day - August 17, 1998:

Hi everyone,

Today I am posting ten shots of good old EMD SD40-2's from contributor Chris Stewart. I always enjoy noting differences between SD40-2's and today, there are again some interesting differences to note. Perhaps the most interesting is one of those that makes me wonder if I should not start posting BN units on the BNSF site, as they are technically BNSF units now.

SD40-2 #7806 while still in BN paint, hints that it is indeed the Santa Fe that is taking over the Burlington Northern, at least in the area of deciding where to place headlights. BN units typically have headlights above the cab, while Santa Fe units generally have headlights on the nose. "BNSFized" does not necessarily mean repainted.

Another unit that has somewhat lost it's BN identity is SD40-2 #7270. The "Burlington Northern" lettering typically found under the logo has been painted over. This kind of reminds me of the SD40-2's modern counterpart, the SD70MAC - which never carried the Burlington Northern name spelled out - just the BN logos.

For what it's worth, I think I'll still post units in full BN paint (or almost full - no BNSF markings) to the BN site, as they will eventually be incorporated in the BNSF site anyway.
