Message of the day - August 31, 2004:

Hi everyone,

I really had some homework to do regarding the histories of today's subjects from contributors Chris Stewart and Larry Larson. I was not quite up to the task on business car BNA 7, also known as Kootenai River. This appears to be the second car to wear the Kootenai River name as per F. Hol Wagner's 1975-1976 Burlington Northern Annual, but with the number BNA 4 instead of BNA 7. The first Kootenai River was built by Pullman in 1947 as GN A-28. Unfortunately, I don't have Robert C. Del Grosso's 1992 BN Annual handy, where some juicy info about the second Kootenai River likely exists. Del Grosso's 1997 BNSF Annual lists the car as BNA 7 built by Pullman in 1912, and his 2000-2001 BNSF Locomotive and Business Car Review lists the car as built by ACF in 1912. I would guess the most recent book is correct.

I also had to do a bit of digging through the BN Annual collection to find data on Snowplow #972528, also referred to as a snow dozer or Russel Snowplow, and RSPU #972569 where RSPU stands for Rotary Snowplow Power Unit. Several of these were converted from F9A's and F9B's.

Enjoy,
Charles
