Message of the day - September 21, 2011:

Hi everyone,

While I may have reached the end of the ex-CB&Q material from the Moss E. Hulsey collection, there are still a few more from that era of GN, NP, and even SP&S heritage.

Two photos featured today have questionable dates. In cases where I have a month, day, and year noted I expect that to be accurate, but in cases where I have only a month and year, that is often the processing date of the slide, which may or may not match the month and year that the photo was taken.

The date of April 1974 for F7A #640 is particularly questionable given the date I have for this unit to be retired is October 1972. Sure, sometimes the unit may sit in a dead line for years after retirement, but this photo shows the unit just inches from the wash rack. I just don't think the BN would have taken such great care of a unit retired a year and a half prior to the date of this photo.

The date of July 1972 for S2 #936 is close enough to the date retired of May 1972 that there simply may have been a couple months of processing delay, or it may be sitting stored after retirement given the scene. I would at least expect the exhaust stack to be capped if the unit was retired, but perhaps such care was not taken in this case.

Enjoy,
Charles
