Message of the day - April 27, 2004:

Hi everyone,

Here are another five photos by Moss E. Hulsey, once again of those interesting 20 cylinder subjects. Granted some of these have been rebuilt in some fashion, and I have not checked to see if they are still 20 cylinder motors, I assume they are. Many ATSF SD45-2's still survive on the BNSF to this day.

Then there are the full width cowl body locomotives such as the ATSF F45 (also known as SDF45 on the Santa Fe, most likely a rebuild designation). These enjoy popularity among railfans, but are not as loved by the railroads, and I believe these have all been retired. Difficulty researching the date retired for F45 #5988 caused me to put off assembling a full roster page at this time for this model. I should also mention I am having some difficulty regarding the accuracy of either the photo date or rebuild date on this unit, as the number 5988 was likely applied when the unit was rebuilt in May 1983, assuming that is indeed when it was rebuilt. I have a lot to learn about Santa Fe motive power history.

Before today, my only F45 photo was of F45 #5964, which no longer carries any Santa Fe markings, only MKM as of March 20, 1997. Del Grosso books report most and perhaps all remaining F45's as leased from MKM since August 1995, with photos showing various amounts of Santa Fe lettering. So for now, suffice it to say I have a can of worms on my hands, and until another F45 photo comes along, I will have little motivation to research this further.

Enjoy!
Charles
